Whilst attending an interview can appear a daunting prospect, always prepare thoroughly and never rely on luck as this will affect your nerves and confidence on the day! It is therefore imperative you research thoroughly, so you can present yourself as professionally as possible.
Find out as much as you can with the support of your Rubicon Consultant, about the company you are applying to prior to your meeting. The company website is always a good place to start, which will give you a feel for the culture of the organisation. Check out trade press articles and company financial results, which will give you confidence when answering the questions.
To help you with the type of question you may be asked, look at the responsibilities of the role to see what skills and experience your interviewer may be seeking. Here are some typical questions:-
Why are you interested in joining our group?
Why are you leaving your current employment?
What would your colleagues say about you?
What key achievement are you most proud of?
Why are you interested in the role?
Sell yourself to me!
You should always dress conservatively for a job interview, and your choice of colour can say a lot about you! You should consider the message you are sending when selecting. Blue and grey sends out sophistication, loyalty, calmness and authority and is always a great choice for an interview! However you should consider adding a “splash” of colour to your wardrobe to denote your personality. Consider accessories such as ties, scarves, shoes and jewellery, but make sure you keep it simple and easy on the eye.
It is natural to feel nervous before an interview. But unfortunately, when you are nervous you are more likely to speak too quickly and this will make you feel even more nervous. To help control this, take two deep breaths before you start, and try not to gabble! Remember you have the skills to do the role; this is your chance to showcase yourself!
Use Eye Contact! People make judgments about you from the way you come across through your use of body language. To project yourself in a positive way, you need to make a confident entrance, stand tall, look your interviewer in the eye and offer a firm handshake. Always maintain eye contact when asked a direct question. Always conduct yourself professionally and if something unexpected occurs, show a sense of humour!
Always plan your route well in advance, and check for delays i.e. road works, train cancellations, road closures etc Always allow time to spare, to compile yourself and go over your research. During the interview never complain about a past or current employer, as this is unprofessional no matter how unhappy your experience. Do not raise salary discussions, as Rubicon will manage this on your behalf outside of the interview room. Stress your achievements and skill set, look alert and interested throughout. Always remember to have two topical questions to ask your Interviewer about their business, trends, and expectations.
Try to enjoy your interview. If you look as it you are going to enjoy the experience you will send out the right signals. Always ask if there are any doubts now they have met you, so you can counteract these before departing.
Always remember to call your Rubicon Consultant with your feedback as quickly as possible, as this reflects your enthusiasm for the role!
